LIFT PUBLIC TRANSPORT NEARBY ORIGINAL ELEMENTS AIR CONDITIONING CLASSIC FINCA BALCONY CATALAN VOLTA THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Living in the Gotic, heritage and history are the strong points of the Gotic neighbourhood. This area includes some of the city's main points of interest, such as the Placa Reial, the Cathedral and the Call. Although this makes it one of the most touristy areas of Barcelona, the neighbourhood does its utmost to preserve the warmth of a neighbourhood that it appreciates and values. The location is unbeatable, with the sea right next door and plenty of culture within easy reach. In fact, the Gotic is in the most central area, next to Placa de Catalunya, La Rambla, Via Laietana and the port. It also serves as the political centre of the city, as it is home to various institutions, such as the City Council and the Generalitat. The Gotic is the historic centre, where it all began. The streets of the neighbourhood have witnessed important events of the 20th century. From the balcony of the Generalitat, Lluis Companys proclaimed the Republic in 1934; the walls of the harmonious Placa de Sant Felip Neri still bear the marks of the wartime bombardments; Rusinol and Picasso chatted in the Els Quatre Gats brewery, and Angel Guimera lived in Carrer de Petritxol, famous for its chocolate shops. The heritage value it represents, the variety and differences from the other neighbourhoods that make it up and, therefore, the complexity of the urban processes that take place in this area, have led it to specialise in the tertiary sector of activity, and it has become the most important centre of commerce in Barcelona and Catalonia. PUIG I CADAFALCH The building where the Via Laietana project is located belonged to the Guarro family, a family of great prestige in Barcelona, who commissioned Puig i Cadafalch to design this building. The Guarros were a family of patrons (who contributed to the construction of the Palau de la Musica) and a politician who was a councillor of culture for the Regionalist League. In this building, Puig i Cadafalch relied on a very innovative structure for the time of construction. The building is part of the architectural heritage of the city and is listed with protection level C. Built in 1922 by Puig i Cadafalch, in his noucentista period. His work during this period is characterised by greater austerity and a greater concern for functionality, without renouncing elegance and architectural quality. The facade is built with a differentiated treatment between the lower, intermediate and upper levels. The ground floor is distributed with columns supporting five semicircular arches on the mezzanine, the main floor has a tribune with six pairs of Tuscan columns, on which rests the stone balcony of the upper floor, the next three floors have individual wrought iron balconies, to finish on the top floor with another balcony in stone and iron, closing the building with stone railing adorned with six ciboria.
